Water injection in oil wells pdf
A well in which fluids are injected rather than produced, the primary objective typically being to maintain reservoir pressure. Two main types of injection are common: gas and water. Separated gas from production wells or possibly imported gas may be reinjected into the upper gas section of the reservoir. Water-injection wells are common
attributed to the wells being low pressure, low temperature oil wells with little water. There are two main methods for injecting inhibitor into a well stream. The first method is to inject down a dedicated treater string enabling continuous injection, and the second is to bullhead at periodic intervals down the tubing with the well shut in
• It is the injection of water into a wellbore to push, or “drive” oil to another well where it can be produced • Recognized enhanced oil recovery technique since early 1900’s • Some oil reservoirs have natural water influx, which increases oil production – Called “water drive” reservoirs
Well Design and Well Integrity The main observation from these studies is that cased wells as more prone to leakage than drilled and abandoned wells, and injection wells are more prone to leakage than producing wells. well on the west side of the fault, and a well on either side of the fault. The results showed that the amount of water injection necessary was nearly the same in all cases, with the two well scenario simply splitting the total volume needed between the two wells.
Well Performance . Two interrelated components are key to understanding flow regimes – the potential for injection into the reservoir (reservoir performance) and the restrictions imposed by the completion and wellbore system hydraulics.

Production wells. In many cases, the water injection wells are drilled as new wells; however, the production wells typically are those that already are producing from the oil field. For waterflooding, producers should be completed in the same intervals in which the injection wells are completed. If the production wells are completed in several

Well injectivity which describes the well-to-reservoir connection, is a central factor in any water injection operation. The formation characteristics, water properties, well configuration and the injection water pressure determine this. Injection well behaviour is dominated by fracture geometry if the well is operated at sufficiently high

Line patterns occur when the water is forced through a series of injection wells which are lined up side by side. This creates a sweeping effect. water. The advantages of this method are the ease of water injection, water availability, high water distribution through the oil areaand the high efficiency of oil displacement by water in the oil-rich area. One of the main problems of this method is the low volume of water sweeping efficiency, especially in heterogeneous reservoirs.

an advantage, but the wells are perforated high in the oil zone to delay the water breakthrough. When water breakthrough does occur the well can either be shut-down, or assisted using gas lift. Reinjection of water into the aquifer is seldom done because the injected water usually just disappears into the aquifer with no effect on aquifer pressure.
injection begins. Above the free-oil level, water saturation will be at its irreducible value. The transition zone between the free-oil and free-water levels is character-ized by a gradual increase in water satura-tion to 100%. In this zone, both oil and water are partially mobile. The thickness of the transition zone depends on factors such as

In the oil industry, waterflooding or water injection is where water is injected into the oil field, usually to increase pressure and thereby stimulate production. Water injection wells can be found both on- and offshore, to increase oil recovery from an existing reservoir.
The water used for this process is usually brine but can also be produced water from the well. Filtration is often necessary to ensure that no materials clog the well pores and needs to be treated to reduce any bacteria growth. Primary production usually only recovers 30-35% of the oil. Water injection can recover 5-50% of the oil remaining in

Abstract Poor injection water quality is a prime factor in the reduction in injectivity in many water injection and disposal wells. These rejections in injectivity often result in costly workovers, stimulation jobs and recompletions or, in many cases, the uncontrolled fracturing of wells by high bottomhole pressures resulting in poor water injection conformance and reduced overall sweep

Injection well transient testing and analysis are simple as long as the mobility ratio between the injected and in-situ fluids is about unity and the radius of investigation is not beyond the water (injected fluid) bank. Figure 14-1 shows types of tests, limitations, and their uses.
In most reservoirs, the formation pressure is adequately high to maintain a complete column of fluid in the borehole and track the pressure at the surface. The method of Injection Well Testing is designed to optimize the operating conditions of an injection well and maximize oil recovery from water flood without causing any damage to the reservoir.
Water injection (aka waterflooding), a form of secondary enhanced oil recovery (EOR), was first applied by oil producers in Pennsylvania in the early 1920s. In addition to restoring depleted pressure within the reservoir, it also helped transport the remaining oil to the production wells, where it could be recovered.
